GREEN LAKE MILK CARTON DERBY KICKS OFF SEAFAIR AND SUMMER SATURDAY JULY 10

Seafair blasts onto the scene at Green Lake with the Pirate’s Booty Milk Carton derby Saturday, July 10, 10:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. (8:30 a.m. registration), attracting thousands of spectators to watch more than 100 wacky milk carton boats compete for $10,000 in prizes. A kids bounce house and plenty of food booths, along with exhibitors, line the shores. Visit the FOGL booth to learn more about Green Lake water quality while the kiddies make paper fish on sticks. The race starts at the southwest corner of Green Lake, near the Aqua Theater and the Green Lake Small Craft Center (5900 West Green Lake Way N).

IMPROVING WATER CLARITY IN GREEN LAKE

Green Lake water clarity varies with the amount of suspended sediment (clays and silts) and/or plankton (microscopic plants and animals also known as algae) in the water. The graph below shows that water clarity improved following the 2004 alum treatment, which continues to be effective at reducing phytoplankton blooms. Click the image below for a larger version. See the Monitoring page for more details.

REPORT TOXIC BLUE-GREEN ALGAE BLOOM

Feb. 2008 algae bloom

Toxic blue-green algae looks pea-green in this Feb. 2008 Green Lake pic.

The Washington Dept of Ecology has started a program to test blue-green algae blooms for toxicity. Any blooms in Green Lake should be reported so they can be recorded and tested.

The bloom usually looks pea-green, and can be scum or filaments or small spheres. As the cells die, they can release pigment that is a striking blue (see the photo below). Digital photos help document the bloom. Contact Gayle Garman / Richard Fleming (206-525-1974), Sally Abella (206-296-8382), or Tricia Shoblom (425-649-7288) to report a bloom.

The 2007 bloom was sampled by the County Dept. of Natural Resources and was predominantly Anabaena flos-aquiae, which can produce a neurotoxin. Shoreline accumulations also were seen Jan. and Feb. 2008.
